OMB Watch Statement: Compromise Efforts on FY 2009 Budget Resolution

WASHINGTON, April 22, 2008—Two major challenges face a congressional conference committee this week as it enters a critical period in forging a compromise out of the House and Senate FY 2009 budget resolutions adopted in March. The conference committee will need to address some of the glaring inadequacies and misplaced priorities in funding for domestic investments in both the House and Senate resolutions. It will also need to reconcile two significant differences between these versions if a final resolution for FY 2009 is to pass Congress. Read More

Proposed Economic Stimulus Package Falls Short
WASHINGTON, Jan. 24, 2008—Provisions of a proposed fiscal stimulus package, which was agreed to by House leaders and the Bush administration, were announced this afternoon at a press conference with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH), and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. Lack of Resources and Misplaced Priorities at IRS Perpetuate Tax Gap, New Report Shows
WASHINGTON, Jan. 15, 2008—A lack of enforcement resources and misplaced priorities at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) are among the factors perpetuating the federal tax gap, according to a new OMB Watch report released today. The report, Bridging the Tax Gap: The Case for Increasing the IRS Budget, illustrates why the IRS has had such a difficult time recovering the more than $300 billion in federal taxes that go unpaid every year. Statement: Congress Abandons Fiscal Responsibility in AMT Patch Vote
WASHINGTON, Dec. 19, 2007— Adding insult to a year of fiscal policy injuries, Congress has abandoned fiscal responsibility by waiving pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) rules in order to pass a one-year patch to the alternative minimum tax (AMT) without offsets. This tax cut adds another $50 billion to an already expanding deficit next year, and will give fewer options for our children and grandchildren to seek solutions to the problems of tomorrow.
