Americans for a Fair Estate Tax Announce Statement of Principles

  Eat the Rich

On Tuesday, Americans for a Fair Estate Tax (AFET), a diverse coalition of public interest groups that OMB Watch is a part of and that champion a strong estate tax, adopted a new statement of principles on the tax. We argue that with both a dire need for the government to increase investment in basic public services and a credible long-term deficit problem looming, this is no time for Congress to grant further financial relief to the country's wealthiest citizens by reducing the estate tax.

In the document, Americans for a Fair Estate Tax further maintains that the estate tax provides a needed check on the concentration of wealth and power in this country while ensuring that those families who have benefited the most from publically provided goods pay their fair share to maintain them.

With this in mind, AFET calls on Congress and the President to take the following steps:

  • Exempt no more than the first $2 million ($4 million for married couples) of assets in an estate.
  • Set a tax rate of no less than 45 percent for the taxable portion of estates, with an additional 10 percent tax on the taxable portion exceeding $10 million.
  • Restore a credit for state estate and inheritance taxes.
  • Simplify the estate tax by reunifying the gift and estate tax, and allow for portability of estate tax exemptions between spouses.

You can read the specifics of these proposals within our statement of principles.

Joey, obviously you haven't

Joey, obviously you haven't the faintest understanding of what it is to deserve something. You seem to think that you deserve ALL of the income from your labor, investments etc. and that your offspring deserve to be gifted all of your assets after your death. However, did you deserve the natural talents you born with? No, you did nothing to earn them. Did you deserve the stable family you were born into? No, you were just lucky. These are all things that contribute to your socioeconomic position and the total size of your estate. Do your offspring deserve your estate after your death? No, they did nothing to create that estate. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with taxing you and your estate. After all it is only through the rule of law imposed by government that it is possible to transfer resources in the first place. And, of course, a stable government needs funds. Next time you should think things through more clearly.

Gary Let me guess, you're a

Gary Let me guess, you're a flat broke liberal that's sick and tired of being screwed over by "da man" You want the rich to pay for your health care, housing, education and food stamps....after all you deserve it. Over the next few years America will wise up again and figure out that the Republicans have the answers not the Democrats. Maybe you haven't noticed but it's started already.....Ted Kennedy's seat???.......lol The estate tax laws will be rescinded once and for all and those that earn their money will get to keep it.
