Plugged In, Tuning Up: An Assessment of State Legislative Websites
State Responses and Updates
Louisiana
Louisiana considers its Legislative Portal Page simply an entry point to the information provided by the legislative bodies - House and Senate. It is not created to duplicate the information already provided by the respective chambers. The legislative portal functions in the same manner as a State Portal Page. A State Portal Page does not provide the information for local government (i.e. school board), state government (i.e. Dept of Education), Judicial (i.e. State Supreme Court), Legislative (i.e. House/Senate). It only points and directs the user to the links and information already available. As such, it directs users to locate specific features within the individual websites of each chamber, and not from the overall legislature's website.
Legislator Information
Member Contact Service
Considerations
- (Senate) Louisiana has a directory of members and profile pages (including committee assignments, district number, capitol office contact information, district office contact information, press releases, topics of interest, and mail to applications associated with the Senator's District Office E-mail Address).
- (Senate) Louisiana uses all methods of locating a member - district number (http://senate.legis.state.la.us/senators/ByDistrict.asp), name,
parish (http://senate.legis.state.la.us/senators/ByParish.asp), and address (http://senate.legis.state.la.us/senators/ByAddress.htm), (even a listing
of Registrar of Voters are listed on this link for those who need additional assistance)
Legislative Tracking and Monitoring
Legislative Administration
- (Senate): Leadership information is located not only on the main Home Page (http://senate.legis.state.la.us/Default.htm), but Senators also have their own Home Page - Officers (http://senate.legis.state.la.us/Officers)-- providing the rules governing their office and linking to additional pages). The Senate does not have majority or minority leaders or caucuses.
- (Senate): The Senate has a Secretary of the Senate and not a clerk. He is not only listed on the Senate Home Page, but he also has his own Home Page linked to his name (http://senate.legis.state.la.us/Secretary)
- (House): Majority & Minority leadership are not applicable, but House leadership is available (http://house.legis.state.la.us/WebCitizens/mayoroff99.htm), Caucuses (http://house.legis.state.la.us/cauc99.htm), Clerk's Office (http://house.legis.state.la.us/WebHouseSupport/clerkOffice.htm), Legislative Research (http://house.legis.state.la.us/WebHouseSupport/clerkOffice.htm)
- (Senate): Depending on the definition of "Oversight Body" "Special Bodies" and "Task Forces" in the report, there are several committees which are linked under the committee pages: Joint Legislative Committee on the
Budget (http://senate.legis.state.la.us/JointBudget/Default.asp), Select Committee for Oversight of the Greater New Orleans Expressway (http://senate.legis.state.la.us/Causeway/Default.asp). Also, we have a searchable database for the State Boards and Commissions (http://senate.legis.state.la.us/Systems&Services/Boards/Default.htm)
- (Senate) The Senate has a Home Page for Senate Staff/Divisions (http://senate.legis.state.la.us/Staff&Divisions/Default.htm), as well as individual Home Pages for various Divisions. The Staff Information (http://senate.legis.state.la.us/Staff&Divisions/Structure.htm) provides listings for all divisions and staff for the Senate, including Legal Affairs and Legislative Research.
