NPT ACTIVITIES
1999 NPT Innovation Awards
In Memorium: Janel Radtke

It is with great honor that we award this year's Innovation Award in the
memory of our colleague and friend Janel Radtke. She was President of
Radiant Communications, Inc., a virtual consulting group that works
with nonprofits in their communications planning and strategic application
of new technologies. She brought to the field 20 years of experience with
nonprofits and technology, having provided both training and direct
services to a number of groups.

She was the first executive director of the Center for Strategic
Communications, and also served as president of communications for Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and was a board member of the
Partnership in Philanthropy and the Cooperative Development. Last year
saw the publication of her book, Strategic Communications for Nonprofits.

She was an instrumental part of the Nonprofits' Policy and Technology
project at OMB Watch, serving on the Working Group for the Project since
its inception, as a member of the Innovation Awards review committee and
Communications Task Force. In the precursor to NPT, NonProfit America,
she was an active participant. Even when there was great controversy and
debate, her energy and enthusiasm helped to propel things. At OMB Watch,
we will remember her as someone who always kept her eye on the ball. She
recognized and responded to the needs of nonprofits to strengthen their
capacity to use newer technologies. She was a fierce advocate for such
causes, including for the National Strategy for Nonprofit Technology and
the recently launched Nonprofit Technology Enterprise Network (N-TEN).

She will be remembered as an energetic force who inspired
nonprofits to think both creatively and strategically about how to use
information and communication tools and techniques to affect change within
the sector and across society. Her tireless enthusiasm, support, wit,
curiosity and insight will be greatly missed by us all.

By honoring the Grand Prize winner, we similarly seek to inspire nonprofits to employ creative, innovative and effective technology solutions to public policy needs.
