OMB Watch exists to increase government transparency and accountability; to ensure sound, equitable regulatory and budgetary processes and policies; and to protect and promote active citizen participation in our democracy.

OMB Watch envisions a more just and democratic society, one in which an open, responsive government protects people’s health, safety, and well-being, safeguards the environment, honors the public’s right to information, values an engaged and effective citizenry, and adequately invests in the common good.

Our History: Highlights

  1. OMB Watch was founded by Gary Bass in 1983. Within months, it had a staff of three people: David Plocher (who now works at the GAO), Shannon Ferguson, and Gary Bass. None of the staff were paid regularly. We used a Radio Shack TRS-80 computer with 8-inch floppy drives to publish a newsletter and alerts. Our main focus was shining a light on the Office of Management and Budget.

Our Work

OMB Watch was formed in 1983 to lift the veil of secrecy shrouding the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB). OMB oversees federal regulation, the budget, information collection and dissemination, proposed legislation, testimony by agencies, and much more. While OMB's actions were having an enormous impact on agency operations and the pursuit of social justice, it remained largely behind the scenes — unaccountable and little understood by the public and public interest groups.

OMB Watch RSS Feeds

Most of the content on the OMB Watch web site is available as RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds, up-to-date summaries of the content posted on the site. Most web browsers (Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.) support subscribing to RSS feeds just by clicking on the RSS icon.
